Legacy Development Center – Downtown

In collaboration with the South Plains Community Action Association, the YWCA offers eight Head Start classrooms.

The intent of Head Start is to address health, nutrition, cognitive development, and social skills for 3- and 4-year olds. The program offers a holistic approach to school-readiness. The curriculum is research-based and focuses on developing the skills necessary for success in school. Head Start children receive a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack each day.

Our curriculum is the Texas OWL (Opening the World of Learning) a Comprehensive Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum.

In conjunction with the curriculum, the classroom learning framework matches up with the Pre-K guidelines for the state of Texas. These guidelines include:

  • Social and Emotional Development
  • Approaches to Learning
  • Language Development
  • Literacy Knowledge and Skills
  • Mathematics Knowledge and Skills
  • English Language Development
  • Social Studies
  • Logic and Reasoning
  • Creative Arts Expression
  • Science Knowledge and Skills
