At the YWCA Legacy Child Development Center, young children learn through creative and responsive instruction in a nurturing environment designed to maximize their potential and prepare them for success.
Through the focused development of literacy and school readiness, we believe all children of Lubbock deserve the finest care and highest quality education. The YWCA, in collaboration with South Plains Community Action Association, offers eight early learning classrooms with the primary focus of preparing children for kindergarten and school readiness.
The Legacy’s CDC lead teachers have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Early Education and significant training in the special needs of early childhood and the impact of high-risk factors in the home and family. There is frequent interaction with parents and an emphasis on helping parents develop strategies to support each child’s specific needs. Our curriculum is the Texas OWL (Opening the World of Learning) a Comprehensive Pre- Kindergarten Curriculum. In conjunction with this, the classroom learning framework matches up with the Pre-K guidelines for the State of Texas. This includes:
- Physical Development and Health
- Social and Emotional Development
- Approaches to Learning
- Language Development
- Literacy Knowledge and Skills
- Mathematics Knowledge and Skills
- English Language Development
- Social Studies
- Logic and Reasoning
- Creative Arts Expression
- Science Knowledge and Skills
